Where the Chemistry Happens… The Solid State Calcination Chemist will plan and coordinate the synthesis and characterization of lithium ion battery (LIB) cathode materials. He/she will be responsible for conceiving, synthesizing, and optimizing the performance of new and innovative cathode materials. The role will also be responsible for developing new concepts in cathode material design and synthesis, and coordinating the refinement of the synthesis parameters with colleagues in RCN/B and RCN/D.   • Conduct independent research leading to the establishment and improvement of the cathode materials.
  • Evaluate results from the synthesis of cathode materials, including materials characterization and electrochemical testing.
  • Coordinate and plan long-range synthesis of cathode materials.
  • Consistently propose ideas, solutions, and projects.
  • Map and develop predictive models for material performance/property relationships.
  • Optimize the performance of new and innovative cathode materials.
  • Maintain current awareness of and implement marketing requirements for cathode material designs.
  • Determine the feasibility and patentability of advanced studies to continually improve the company’s competitive position in the marketplace.
  • Plan, design, monitor, evaluate, and coordinate communication of results, both internally and externally.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or a related degree with 2 years of work experience; OR a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or related discipline with at least 4 years of professional experience; OR a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with 7 years of work experience.
  • Knowledge of solid state chemistry with expertise in XRD techniques and data analysis is required.
  • Knowledge of LIB cathode structure – function relationships and familiarity with testing of batteries and battery materials via electrochemical and instrumental methods is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of research principles, theories, and techniques.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills; must be able to write cogent reports and effectively transmit oral results.

Qualifications – NOTE: Not all positions are eligible for cross-regional relocation/work authorization. Cross regional is defined as movement between countries (e.g., Canada to U.S.).
