Where the Chemistry Happens… Chemical Plant Operator – Wyandotte, Michigan – (1703969) The Chemical Plant Operator may be responsible for all aspects of personal safety, product quality, and operating all aspects of the reactors, as well as, filling, loading, and unloading systems and their auxiliary equipment such as bins, filters, blend tanks, and utility equipment for air, nitrogen, cooling water, and steam. The Chemical Plant Operator will manufacture quality finished goods and manage hazardous raw materials in a safe and efficient manner. This includes running of reactors, load/unload of tank trucks, railcars, totes, or drums as required. This position is part of a job family with multiple levels and will be filled at a level that is commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. In addition, the following activities will be performed by the Chemical Plant Operator:

  • Conduct visual inspection of operating equipment to determine current operating status;
  • Operate DCS and PLC systems in daily work environment
  • Read, record and interpret data of instruments, reactors, tanks, pumps, cooling unit, etc., and makes corrective adjustments as required to keep efficient production on reactor trains;
  • Perform maintenance, i.e., purges, washes, dries, and recharges equipment;
  • Work from both verbal & written instructions of Shift Supervisor, standard procedures, batch sheet & loading sheets to operate reactors, as well as, filling & loading systems;
  • Maintain good housekeeping in work areas and assist in general cleanup as assigned;
  • Contribute to the success of plant goals & objectives through participation in activities to further advance safety, quality, costs, productivity and morale throughout the plant;
  • Participate in all required safety training;
  • Participate in miscellaneous duties including painting, cleanouts, assistance to plant during outages, and maintain operating condition of key equipment
  • Set priorities without supervisor approval
  • Operate environmental control systems, such as the POND, Scrubber, or Thermal Oxidizer
  • Backup to Chemical Handler, Operators, or the like
  • Lift up to 50lbs as required
  • 90% of the work responsibilities will be performed outdoors. Our Chemical Plant Operators will work in the elements while wearing proper PPE at all times.

  • Chemical Plant Operator will need to pass medical clearances necessary to work in the Polyol Plant, including: Respirator, Mobile Equipment Operator, Hazwoper, Hearing Conservation, SCBA and Diisocyanates clearances will be required.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You… Basic Qualifications: Performs all functions including the manufacture of finished goods within compliance of BASF, state, and federal requirements, including production, labeling, inspection and shipment of these shipments; responds to spills, so to contain and control materials safely on site; uses necessary safety equipment and personal protective equipment; participates in required training and drills.

  • High School diploma or equivalent education
  • 6 months of experience in a manufacturing or production environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fork truck license preferred
  • Direct experience with weighing, conveying, and packaging operations with PSM Chemicals preferred
  • Manufacturing or production experience in a chemical plant
  • Demonstrated strong end-user computer skills including executing complex SAP transactions
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot systems and identify likely problems.
