Where the Chemistry Happens… The Product Manager is responsible for the strategic and operational portfolio management of the Acetylenic Specialties portion of the CIN/AS business within the Intermediates Division. This individual will be responsible for a $45M business that is expected to grow at a rate of nearly 5% per year. The business is supported by North American production in Geismar, LA, as well as with imported products from Ludwigshafen, Germany. The role is responsible for achieving the regional Strategic Business Unit (SBU) and product line targets relative to implementing strategy, driving financial performance, and setting operational priorities including tactical implementation of pricing models, portfolio management, and capital planning. Tasks include financial performance (P&L) management, pricing development, customer/product portfolio management, development of working capital plans, and fixed cost optimization. The Product Manager will be required to partner with global and regional marketing colleagues to develop, shape, and implement marketing strategies. The role must develop, maintain, and steer mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues in downstream Business Units, as they play a role in the overall success of the product line in North America, as well as globally. Additionally, the role contributes to the development of new business based on the identification and commercialization of customer projects in strict collaboration with the New Business Development function. Lastly, the Product Manager is a key interface to the organization’s functional resources (e.g., production, supply chain, sales, legal, procurement, technical, regulatory) as well as other Business Units.   • Responsible for regional development, implementation, and management of commercial strategies for product portfolio (i.e., product positioning, business plan development and execution).
  • Manage product pricing and margin management (i.e., pricing strategy, applied pricing models, costs analysis, budget planning).
  • Understand the regional market structure’s economics, growth, trends, opportunities, value chain, customers, and competitive environment.
  • Guide the sales force relative to product pricing and positioning, contract negotiations, competitive/market information, crisis management, customer/product action plans, and customer communications to align with the business/product strategies.
  • Follow-up on new leads and opportunities, prioritize and commercialize projects to bring new sales each year.
  • Actively manage distribution network including identifying and selecting the right distribution partners, financial target setting, training, and technical service as needed to help them succeed.
  • Represent North America’s interest in global SBU teams; including Sales and Operation Planning (S&OP), Global SBU business meetings, Global Strategy Development, and Product Life Cycle/Marketing Teams.
  • Actively drive continuous improvements of cost, production, quality, supply chain, and service levels focused on competitiveness, financial performance, and operational excellence.
  • Responsible for Product Portfolio Management; launch, repositioning, quality, packaging, management of change, and withdrawal. Support innovation process for product portfolio.
  • Coordinate with Supply Chain to achieve operational strategies relative to demand planning (APO), product allocation, and inventory management
  • Represent the business as key interface with the customer care, manufacturing, supply chain, procurement, R&D, and Regulatory organizations to successfully deliver business plan targets.
  • Develop plans for investment projects to support market growth/ SBU strategy.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Marketing, Business, or closely related field required; advanced degree is a plus.
  • A minimum of 7 years of broad career experience, with prior background in Marketing, Sales, Project Management, Product Management, or New Business Development preferred.
  • Strong business and financial acumen, as well as critical thinking and analytical skills related to finances, markets, and data
  • Solid understanding of supply chain principles and systems.

  • Strong skills relative to project coordination, time management, multi-tasking, and delivering on commitments.
