Where the Chemistry Happens… The Strategic Planning Manager is a critical team member supporting the Global Process Catalysts Business (CCP). The Process Catalyst Business encompasses two Strategic Business Units (SBUs); the Refinery Catalyst SBU CCR and the Chemical Catalyst SBU CCC. This position provides strategic analysis, develops business models, makes recommendations, and manages projects to support these growing SBUs. The individual collaborates with business unit management including senior-level executives (VP/SVP/ President), as well as external contacts, to develop strategic options and appropriate business and marketing plans. In addition, s/he works with the Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) group to evaluate and validate business proposals for growth opportunities for the division.   • Monitor, research, and analyze the business environment. Provide data, analysis, and recommendations based on key business drivers such as overall industry and market trends, customer and supplier assessments, competitive analysis, and partner and alliances feedback.
  • Support CCR and CCC with Market Intelligence and produce a monthly Global Market Intelligence Report analyzing the market drivers leading market indicators that would impact the Process Catalysts Business.
  • Work closely with the Strategic Intelligence Group within CC/S to monitor CCCs and CCRs competitors, analyze quarterly financial reports, and benchmark with internal business performance.
  • Understand customer needs and market trends, work with the business to enhance customer experience for key customers.
  • Partner with the business in identifying and implementing appropriate strategic business development and marketing initiatives.
  • Continue to develop, maintain, improve, and update internal databases and Market Model tools to define market size and market growth of process Catalysts under different macroeconomic conditions.
  • Collaborate and synthesizes information across different functions and regions to ensure a deeper understanding of the business environment. Report and make appropriate recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Liaise and coordinate information sharing with appropriate BASF central functions including controlling, asset management, R&D, and business management across global business units and divisions.
  • Be responsible for annual strategic controlling initiative.
  • Review and provide input to market statements for capital projects to ensure alignment with strategic initiatives.
  • Provide strategic perspective to M&A and New Business Development activities through research, providing data, and analyzing options for acquisitions, partnership and/or alliances, as appropriate.
  • Manage projects to evaluate strategic options facing the business. The outcome of these projects typically includes a recommended path forward.
  • Attend global and regional business meetings to share strategic developments with key stakeholders of business.
  • Lead divisional projects representing the Catalysts Division on platform or regional topics.
  • Work with outside vendors, including consultants and business service providers, for market research.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science) or business (Marketing, Finance) discipline is required; advanced technical degree is a plus.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following: business or product management, Catalysis R&D, strategic development and planning, sales and marketing, or procurement.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic concepts derived from synthesizing multiple data analytics, and making appropriate business recommendations.
  • Possess marketing acumen, problem-solving capability, initiative, and creativity.
  • Proficiency in reading financial statements, including annual and quarterly financial reports.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal, negotiations, report writing, and presentation skills with the ability to influence others in multi-cultural and diverse teams while interacting with senior executives, consultants, and key decision-makers; able to effectively communicate with the technical/engineering community.
  • Proficiency in utilizing appropriate project management techniques, with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and projects with a drive to obtain desired results.
