Where the Chemistry Happens… We are seeking an Environment Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist position in the Central Hub to partner with our manufacturing and technical communities. The selected individual will be responsible for supporting, facilitating, and implementation of environmental, health and safety programs designed to assure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements (federal, state, local) for three OH facilities (two located in Beachwood and one located in Streetsboro). This includes two business group functions comprised of a production facility, all on-site Research & Development, as well as the Remote and Technical communities. Occasional support of other sites within the Hub will also be required. The incumbent will have proven expertise in environmental, health, including industrial hygiene, occupational safety, process safety, and can generate innovative solutions for continuous EHS improvement.   • Provide technical and regulatory expertise to ensure occupational safety and environmental compliance at the respective sites as part of a zero-incident mindset.
  • Contribute strategic leadership and work with management on identified EHS issues/recommendations/opportunities to foster continuous improvement of EHS programs and culture.
  • Ensure all program elements are developed under the principles of Operations Line Management Accountability for EHS.
  • Assist sites with implementation of BASF’s Responsible Care® Management Systems (RCMS) including, but not limited to, Control of Hazardous Energy – Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, Hot Work, Fall Protection, Powered Industrial Trucks, Hazard Communication, and Emergency Planning and Response.
  • Be responsible for comprehensive occupational health and Industrial Hygiene (IH) support and oversight to various manufacturing and laboratory facilities within the Central Hub.
  • Perform exposure assessments, including exposure and hazard evaluation, as well as control solutions for chemical agents, biological agents and physical stress agents (e.g., occupational noise). In addition, the incumbent is responsible for data interpretation, data communication (monitoring reports and control recommendation), and regulatory compliance relating to occupational health and safety.
  • Participate in capital project reviews consistent with the level of environmental, industrial hygiene, and safety expertise needed.
  • Provide operational support for Environmental Programs including Air, Waste, and Water Permitting compliance.
  • Effectively use the corporate Environmental Management System tool to ensure EHS tasks are identified and completed at the sites.
  • Support the interface with regulatory agencies and third parties, as needed, on compliance and enforcement issues.
  • Provide field presence and daily support to include, but not limited to, reinforcing a culture of behavior-based safety, field audits/inspections, and coordinate/track findings.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Occupational or Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Engineering, Science, or a Science-related discipline. Candidates with types of Bachelor’s degrees will be considered, if combined with excellent relevant experience and skills within the laboratory and/or manufacturing industry.
  • At least 3 or more years of experience as an EHS professional, which can include co-ops and/or internships, preferably in a laboratory and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to interact with production, research and development technicians and leaders, as well as business management personnel.
  • Capability of engaging with state and federal regulatory agencies, the local community, elected officials, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Able to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) accreditation, or the capability to obtain it, or other professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Professional Engineer.
  • Working knowledge of occupational safety, process safety, and environmental regulations and technology
  • Laboratory and/or chemical manufacturing experience.
