Where the Chemistry Happens… This position is responsible for representing BASF on the construction of medium- ($5 Million) to large- ($25 Million) size projects within the Midwest Regional Service Center Sites. As such, this person will provide front-end input to project managers to develop construction strategies and schedules, and provide the interface between the BASF project team and the construction contractors. Primary responsibilities include the management of the construction sites with regard to safety, quality, schedule, cost, and compliance to specifications.   • Serve as the primary BASF interface to the construction contractor, project team, operations, and engineering groups; especially with regard to installation and execution activities and resolving field problems.
  • Provide technical expertise and consultation (constructability) in the design, contract development/bidding, and construction phases of projects.
  • Coordinate site visits, interpret bid specifications, and explain site-specific security and safety regulations.
  • Responsible for providing and maintaining a safe worksite. Have pro-active involvement with contractors to prevent accidents and injuries. Conduct incident investigations, if necessary.
  • Closely monitor contractors and provide guidance to ensure full understanding of the scope and minimize construction claims. In general, must be able to analyze and choose low-cost alternatives in execution of the work.
  • Continually inspect the construction work to assure that job schedules are maintained and that work is being performed safely as per codes and design specifications.
  • Must be constantly vigilant to ensure that quantity and quality of materials, equipment, and contract labor meet contract requirements.
  • Document field activities and produce necessary reports on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Coordinate duties of other construction engineers and/or contract inspectors.
  • Support Project Team in the review and authorization of field changes.
  • Verify and approve invoices to validate accuracy with respect to work performance and/or equipment delivered, and recommends approval for payment.

This position has full authority to act on BASF’s behalf in the field up to the limits established by project procedures in regards to approving change orders, to make reasonable decisions regarding the need for project travel, to stop work in the field if safety concerns demand it, and to hire engineering partner staff as per an agreed upon staffing plan. Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a technical discipline and 7 or more years of degreed experience in the chemical / petrochemical or a similar manufacturing industry and 4+ years experience as a construction supervisor OR, 15 years of Construction experience in a chemical / petrochemical or a similar manufacturing industry and 4+ years experience as a construction supervisor.
  • Strong safety background with deep understanding of OSHA, construction, and general chemical plant safety requirements.
  • General knowledge of project execution and ability to manage non-technical phases of construction (e.g., planning and scheduling, material receiving, progress tracking).
  • A strong technical background in mechanical equipment installation/pipe fitting/HVAC, or demonstrated experience in the chemical industry where related technical skills were applied.
  • Working knowledge of chemical process equipment including rotating equipment, heat transfer, solids handling, storage tanks, and vessels.
  • Experience with petro-chemical plant construction techniques and demonstrated knowledge of various engineering design disciplines.
  • Be familiar with quality control techniques and their application in the construction industry.
  • Ability to understand and enforce contract documents.
  • Act independently regarding most daily and weekly activities, and interact with supervising manager usually on a consulting and reporting basis.
  • Able to travel up to 50%.
  • Working knowledge of process measurement and control instruments
  • Ability to interact and communicate at a high competency level in manufacturing technical discussions ,displaying strong interpersonal, communication, administrative, personal motivation, and personal adaptability skills.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of the BASF Project Execution Roadmap.

This position may require periodic temporary relocation across North America for project assignments.
