The Controls and Optimization Engineer provides Strategic Controls and Optimization support for the Port Arthur Olefins site. The position identifies, leads and implements control strategies to improve plant operability, reliability and efficiency. Additionally, the position is responsible for maintaining and updating, as needed, RTO models and systems.   • EHS
    • Responsible for environmental and safety compliance support through process control-related engineering and troubleshooting.
  • Site Control Support
    • Responsible Engineer for System Availability and Reliability, Real Time Optimizer (RTO) System (online and offline).
    • Responsible for maintaining RTO models and systems, and updating as needed.
    • Lead RTO programmer for new projects or modifications.
    • Lead direction for strategic control initiatives such as Alarm Management and High Performance Graphics.
    • Identify, lead, and implement control strategies that improve plant operability, profitability, and efficiency.
    • Troubleshoot issues with RTO/ APC/DCS relationships as needed.
    • Serves as primary site advanced process controls expert.
    • Participate in an on-call role for the site process control support team.
    • Support capital project engineering efforts as needed.
    • Oversee vendor/contractor development on APC or RTO additions/changes, ensuring compliance with the technical specifications.
  • Supervisory/Leadership
    • Mentor junior-level control engineers in the control group as needed.
    • Lead the department on a rotating basis with other group engineers during absence of the process control manager.
    • Lead meetings and discussions regarding site economics, and communicate RTO results.
    • Participate in knowledge exchange with other BASF sites for best practices in strategic control areas including, but not limited to, Alarm Management, High Performance Graphics, Real Time Optimization.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and at least 7 years of steam cracking, chemical, petrochemical, or a similar manufacturing experience.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of control systems, and piping and instrument diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of the various types of pressure, level, temperature, and flow instrumentation.
  • Demonstrate team-based interpersonal skills.
  • General computer skills including use of programs such as Microsoft Office and Aspen Process Explorer.

Desired:

  • Experience with AspenTech DMCPlus or other advanced controls
  • Experience with ROMeo Real time Optimization or other RTO systems
