Mechanical Construction Engineer (1704343) – Geismar, LA The Mechanical Construction Engineer manages multiple capital and expense construction projects of various sizes and complexity including construction of new facilities, modifications/improvements to existing facilities, and expansions, focusing primarily on civil, mechanical, electrical and instrument construction activities. S/he will also provide oversight for the execution of supplemental maintenance work such as extraordinary maintenance items and turnarounds. This person provides coordination between the engineering group, contractors, and operations. The role serves as the primary interface between BASF and the contractors and provides technical expertise and consulting in the bidding, execution, and acceptance of work from the contractors. This particular position will primarily focus on civil and mechanical construction activities, but may also supervise some electrical or instrumentation activities. Formula for Success: You Will…

  • Serve as the primary BASF interface to the construction contractor assigned. Work with the project team, operations, and engineering groups; especially with regard to installation and execution activities and resolving field problems.
  • Provide support as required during the design, contract development/bidding, and construction phases of projects.
  • Coordinate site visits, interpret bid specifications, and explain site-specific security and safety regulations.
  • Be responsible for providing and maintaining a safe worksite. Have pro-active involvement with contractors to prevent accidents and injuries. Conduct incident investigations, if necessary.
  • Closely monitor contractors and provide guidance to ensure full understanding of the scope and minimize construction claims. Ability to analyze and choose low-cost alternatives in execution of the work.
  • Continually inspect the construction work to assure that job schedules are maintained and that work is being performed safely, as per code and design specifications.
  • Ensure that quantity and quality of materials, equipment, and contract labor meet contracted requirements.
  • Document field activities and produce necessary reports on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Coordinate duties of outside inspection agencies.
  • Review and authorize field changes within limits of authority.
  • Verify and approve invoices to validate accuracy with respect to work performance and/or equipment delivered, and recommends approval for payment.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering or Construction Management discipline with 5 or more years of years of project, maintenance, reliability and or construction-related experience in a chemical / petrochemical or other similar manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with EHS and applicable construction safety regulatory standards.
  • Understanding of construction techniques and practices.
  • Basic computer skills and use of business software (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) are also a requirement.
  • Familiarity with quality control techniques and their application in the construction industry.
  • Ability to manage non-technical phases of project construction (e.g., planning and scheduling, receiving and handling systems etc.).

This position requires all candidates to either currently possess or obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential) Card from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security.
