Where the Chemistry Happens…

BASF is seeking a Sr / Staff Mechanical Engineer to provide mechanical and pipe engineering support and/or design activities associated with project scope development, estimating, detailed design, drafting, project execution, and coordination of capital projects and internal customers in maintenance. This position is located in Freeport, TX.

As the Sr / Staff Mechanical Engineer, you will support the stationary equipment and piping inspection group as necessary. You will also provide expertise and knowledge in Piping and Pressure Vessel Codes (ASME B31.3, ASME 31G, Section VIII Division I, API 510/570, API 620/650 and other applicable ASME and API Codes).

Formula for Success: You Will…

Provide Capital Support

  1. Support capital projects through all phases - basic engineering (front-end-loading), design engineering, procurement, construction, and start-up/commissioning.
  2. Ensure quality design, cost compliance, and schedule activities are met as related to Mechanical Engineering.
  3. Effective coordination of Mechanical documents and design issues with project managers and other engineering disciplines.
  4. Serve as the BASF Representative for monitoring and oversight of projects performed by external engineering firms to ensure quality, cost, and schedule compliance.
  5. Identify, evaluate, and promote cost-savings opportunities regarding equipment design and construction opportunities.
  6. Develop and Maintain Mechanical documents equipment technical data sheets throughout the project.
  7. Specify and support procurement of pipe and mechanical equipment (both stationary and rotating).
  8. Answer requests-for-information (RFI) from fabrication shops and equipment manufacturers.
  9. Answer RFI's from Construction during plant erection.
  10. Answer RFI's from Operations during plant start-up.

Provide Maintenance Support

  1. Provide Mechanical Engineering calculations including:
    1. Minimum wall thickness, Remaining Life, and Fitness-for-Service.
    2. Hydrotest pressures
    3. Vessel re-rates
    4. Nozzle addition/replacement
  2. Provide Guidance for piping stress analysis, with respect to PSV reaction forces and other standard requirements. Provide guidance on stationary equipment and pipe inspection techniques.
  3. Work with block Mechanical Maintenance engineers regarding equipment locations and establishing preventative maintenance schedules in SAP.

You will also have Strategic Engineering Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in North American Technical Network (NATN) and other teams regarding mechanical equipment and piping design, fabrication and installation.
  2. Review, validate, and provide feedback on new and revised Corporate policies and procedures related to Mechanical and Piping disciplines.
  3. Review/create policies/procedures relating to mechanical and piping design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance.
  4. Review and promote new technology regarding vendor supplied items, including valves, gaskets, and fabrication / construction methods.
  5. Provide assistance to procurement with technical reviews of valves, gaskets, and other piping components.
  6. Evaluate physical and software tools and methods of construction and inspection for improved efficiency.
  7. Provide assistance to linked sites relating to piping and general mechanical engineering.

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You…

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of experience with mechanical equipment design, fabrication and inspection.
  • Experience with pipe stress design.
  • Experience in executing capital projects, debottlenecking, maintenance activities, and retrofits involving multi-discipline interfaces.
  • Knowledgeable with applicable industry Codes as they relate to stationary equipment and piping (ASME, API, TEMA and other applicable codes).
  • Self-starter, good communication skills, organization, coordination, and leadership skills.
  • Strong computer skills, to include working knowledge Compress and Caesar II software.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years of experience with mechanical equipment design, fabrication and inspection preferred.
